Greenstick Fractures
Life In Motion Clinic
Fracture can happen at any
age. Even a new born baby can face this blow due to any complications during
the birth giving. However, since the bones are soft till the age of ten, often
children are diagnosed with greenstick fracture. In such fractures, the
bone doesn't break completely, instead it bends and/or cracks. The fracture
looks similar to what happens when you try to break a small, "green"
branch on a tree and is thud called greenstick fracture.
The symptoms of a
greenstick fracture depend on the severity of the crack. Mild fractures might
be mistaken for sprains or bruises while severe ones can cause deformities if
left untreated. The symptoms include:
- Pain
- Bruising
- Tenderness
- Swelling
- Deformity (a bending or twisting) of the
affected body part
Arm
fractures are more common than the leg fractures as one often throws out the
arms to catch or hold something when falling. Even the mildest of the
greenstick fractures is treated by keeping the body part immobilized in a cast.
The orthopedic puts a strong cast around the cracked bone. The cast
prevents the bone from breaking all the way if the child falls on it again
along with holding the cracked pieces of the bone together so they can heal.
The time duration for the cast to be wrapped or a plaster to be installed
depends on the severity and age of the child. However, the usual time varies
between 15 days to a month.
