The anterior cruciate ligament or the ACL is one of the four ligaments/tissues in the knee that help the knee joint to remain stable. The ACL connects the thigh bone to the shinbone. Torn ACLs are one of the most common knee injuries .  Often a pop sound with severe pain followed by intense swelling is the symptoms of a torn ACL . An ACL tear or sprain occurs with an unnatural or unexpected change in direction or pivot against a locked knee . This may occur during the most common sports activities including basketball, football, skiing or tennis. Often women are more prone to ACL injury owing to the differences in the anatomy and muscle functions. A torn ACL can be treated with the help of surgery. Your orthopaedic surgeon might conduct several tests including x-rays of the damaged knee before suggesting surgery.
