One among the other very common problems in hand is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or CTS. We had a discussion with Dr. Rahul Sharma on the same. Here are some insights from the discussion.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome or CTS  is one of the most common problems affecting the hand. People with this condition may feel pain, tingling or numbness and general weakness in the hand and wrist mainly involving thumb , index and middle finger.

Lifestyle changes, like wrist splints , avoid lifting heavy things and physiotherapy are possible treatments. Often the treatment includes a small day care surgery of the  carpaltunnel if conservative management doesn’t work.

What is the carpal tunnel?

The carpal tunnel is a narrow canal in the wrist through which Median nerve passes. Any condition leading to swelling in this limited space causes compression on the nerve and hence symptoms in thumb, index and middle finger.

Does carpal tunnel syndrome only happen to office workers or factory workers?

Not necessarily . In fact many people with CTS have never done office work. Though it affects people who use their wrists and hands repeatedly at work and at play, yet anyone can get CTS.

Who is at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome?

People in jobs that involve repetitive wrist and finger use.

Old, over weight and physically inactive person.

Women ( 3 times more common than in men)

Rheumatoid arthritis, gout, hypothyroidism, pregnancy, menopause, diabetes, alcoholism and trauma.
