What Promotes Medical Tourism In India

When a bone of the body is broken, it is called a fracture. IT can be a small crack to a complete broken one. Often a bone is broken when it is impacted by more pressure than it can tolerate or support. For healing a fracture, often a plaster is placed to provide enough time, help and support to the bone to heal by its own. However, at times, some fractures are needed to be operated.

There are several times when some part of particular bone is replaced and a metallic part is placed in it. Such surgeries are called replacements. These surgeries last for upto few hours depending on the severity of the damage. Often performed in hospitals specialized in orthopedic treatment, the damaged cartilage or bone is removed to be replaced with prosthetic components made from ceramic, metal or plastic.

The most common of all such surgeries are:

·         Knee joint replacement

Knee Replacement Surgeries also known as knee arthroplasty is performed to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis capping the ends of the knee joint bones with the help of metal and plastic parts along with the kneecap. Knee joint replacement surgery is also often operated when the knee cap gets damaged due to any accidental injury. A very common surgery in the elderly, it is not untouched among the youth and sometimes even kids.

·          Hip joint replacement

Sometimes, when either the socket of hip or the thighbone becomes diseased or injured, it causes severe pain, trouble in walking or in everyday tasks thus arising the need for the hip joint replacement. The ball and socket sort parts of the hip are either changed completely or partially as per the damage in the body. Due to installation of the metallic sockets and ball a patient often is restricted from squatting. However, with development in the medical science several surgeons are challenging this limitation and now a patient is seen sitting in squat position.

·          Shoulder replacement

All or part of the damaged shoulder (the glenohumeral joint) is removed and replaced with artificial components called  prosthetic and the process is called prosthetic implant. Such surgery gives relief from arthritis pain and often is done to replace any damaged joint in shoulder. Again most common in the people above the age group of 60, any sort of accidental injury also often leads a patient to shoulder replacement surgery.

Ranging from one lac to as much as up to six lacs depending on the severity, these surgeries have attracted medical tourism in India. Often people from other countries visit India for such treatments, ultimately providing employment to several other sectors including the hospitality industry. However, this is just one aspect of the medical tourism. There are several more medical treatments which attract patients from across the world. We will talk about them in some other blog, next time.
